Srebarna Unesco Preserve :
"Srebarna" is maintained Bulgarian Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Situated near the village of Srebarna r, 16 km west of Silistra and 2 km south of the Danube. Located on the main migration route of all the birds between Europe and Africa, called "Via Pontica".
History :
The legend is that the name comes from the magic picture seen at night under a full moon. When the moon is high, its reflection creates the illusion of molten silver. "Srebarna" in bulgarian mean Silver
Flora :
In and around the lake there reeds and other water plants. Plant community of cane occupies about two thirds of the area of the reserve. It found 139 vascular plant species of which 11 are rare or endangered outside the "Srebarna". The second type of plant is gage cattail (Typha angustifolia) followed by Broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia). Gray (Salix cinerea) and red willow (Salix purpurea) are also widespread.
Fauna :
The fauna in the reserve is very diverse. There are 41 species of mammals, 11 species of reptiles, 10 species of amphibians and 24 species of fish - otter, European wild cat, steppe hopping mouse, water rat snake snake, a great shooter, spur-thighed tortoise, Syrian chesnovitsa (Pelobates Syriacus), Tree Frog, chervenokoremna toad, pike, bream, rudd, crayfish and more.
The reserve is best known birds that can be seen on its territory. 221 species of birds nest in the reserve Silver: Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, glossy ibis, spoonbill, Mute Swan, Ferruginous Duck, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Red-breasted goose, gray goose, ducks, marsh harrier, bluethroat, bearded tit. This is the only traditionally in Bulgaria breeding habitat of the great white heron.
